Antonio’s life took a tragic turn when he was hit by a car and left for dead in a Cumberland County ditch. Found by an animal control officer, the nearly-one-year-old Shepherd-mix was in excruciating pain with severe trauma to his left front and rear legs. X-rays revealed a fractured tibia, fibula, and humerus, casting a shadow over his future.
Cumberland County Animal Services took him in, splinting his legs and starting treatment. Shortly after, US Dog Coalition and Rescue stepped in to foster and oversee his needs for adoption. Antonio’s care continued at HARC, but his road to recovery was long and arduous. For nine straight weeks, Antonio had to be sedated for every bandage change due to the immense pain. His bandages needed changing every five days, sometimes sooner due to his knack for gnawing on them. His playful personality led to broken splints and wet bandages, keeping his caregivers on their toes.
Despite the challenges, Antonio’s spirit never wavered. His resilience shone through as he grew stronger each day. During his recovery, Antonio grew out of three sizes of harnesses used to enable an outside potty. Finally, after more than two months of confinement, sedatives, and round-the-clock care, Antonio was freed from his bandages. He was once again a rambunctious (albeit now 50-pound) puppy!
Antonio’s journey reached a happy ending when he was adopted by a couple with extensive large-dog training experience and a 10-acre property, allowing him to run free like the wind. Now a beautiful large dog, Antonio keeps everyone on their toes and fills his home with joy.
Antonio’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of second chances, and the unwavering dedication of those who care for animals in need. Thanks to the dedication and expertise of the Cumberland County Animal Services and HARC teams, Antonio received the care he needed to thrive.
